The Bookseller – Rights – Jacaranda Books acquires ‘scorching’ domestic thriller from Sara Koffi

Jacaranda Books has signed a “scorching debut” from Sara Koffi that explores the intersection of race, class and female friendship, and the devastating consequences of everyday actions.

Valerie Brandes, CEO, acquired the UK and Commonwealth rights to While we burned by Lauren E Abramo of Dystel, Goderich & Bourret LLC. It will be published on April 25, 2024.

The synopsis reads: “After the mysterious death of her best friend, Elizabeth Smith’s perfect life in the suburbs of Memphis has spiraled out of control – so much so that she hires a personal assistant to keep her on track. Brianna is calm and elegant, exactly who she needs and slips into Elizabeth’s life so neatly, almost as if she belonged there from the start. Soon, the assistant Elizabeth hired to distract her from her obsession with her friend’s death is the same person who works with her to uncover the truth behind it. But why is Brianna so invested?”

Brandes called the book “an inspired addition to the canon of female-led mystery and crime novels” due to Koffi’s ability to “take readers into all the minutiae of suburban American life while also portraying complex and spiky characters with complicated motives paints”.

Koffi said: “I am absolutely ecstatic to publish While we burned with Jacaranda Books. Their commitment to diversifying bookshelves and championing diverse authors aligns perfectly with my vision for the future of publishing. I’m thrilled that British readers will be able to meet a cast of surprising characters in my fast-paced thriller, packed with timely themes and an unhinged showdown you won’t want to miss.”
