Walmart expands augmented reality offering with the introduction of a trial feature for hair color products – Retail Technology Innovation Hub

Earlier this year, Walmart expanded its augmented reality and virtual reality offerings with the launch of a new Optical Virtual Try-On service.

Customers can virtually try on frames and purchase prescription glasses online through the Walmart app or directly from the retail giant’s website.

Walmart says that unlike other platforms, it uses 3D data and advanced algorithms to create a digital twin of eyeglass frames, resulting in an improved experience.

In an online post, Tom Ward, EVP and Chief eCommerce Officer, Walmart US, and David Reitnauer, VP Optical, Walmart Health & Wellness, said: “We want to be there for our customers – wherever, wherever and however they want to shop. For us, the customer is at the center of everything we do.”

To virtually try on more than 750 trend-focused eyewear options online or in the Walmart app, customers click on the “Try them on” flag in the main image on the product page.

They should take the facial scan and look at the glasses as if they were wearing them while looking in the mirror. They then try on the lenses that suit them best.

They upload a valid prescription, allow a scan to capture their interpupillary distance measurements and add their custom glasses to their shopping cart.

Opticians at Walmart’s Vision Centers in the US will be on hand to answer questions throughout the process.

Once someone receives their online shipment, they can visit their local Vision Center and work with an optician to get the finishing touches done.
