The Baton Rouge Walmart fire started in the arts and crafts aisle, fire officials say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A fire that forced a Walmart on Burbank Drive to close in February was caused by a minor in the arts and crafts department, the St. George Fire Department said.

SGFD said the juvenile, who is under 12 years old, has been identified and firefighters have spoken to the family.

“Appropriate juvenile justice systems are now at work to ensure the system is doing its job by intervening and providing education to prevent future incidents,” fire officials said.

“Due to Walmart’s policy, the entire building had to be restocked. So while the overall ‘damage’ from destruction by physical fire was somewhat minimal, the smoke made the situation much worse,” fire officials said.

Walmart gave the fire department a quote of about $9 million, SGFD said.
