Oswego County TodayOswego Students Compete in Battle of the Books; Leighton teams moving forward

1. Leighton Elementary’s Battle of the Books team of Lily Diak, Caitlyn Joyce and Dexter are in disbelief as they defeated their opponents in the tiebreaker round.

OSWEGO – Ten teams of bookworms from the Oswego City School District recently showed off their reading comprehension and memory during the Battle of the Books competition at the Robinson-Faust Theater.

2. Ruth Walker, Shelby Weigand and Emma Stevenson are all smiles after being crowned intermediate level Battle of the Books champions.

The event featured two teams – elementary and middle schools – from each of the district’s five elementary schools. The third and fourth year students took the stage first and answered twelve questions about a selection of books they read. Teams had to correctly identify the author and book title referenced in each question.

When all the points were tallied, the Reading Dragons, consisting of Lily Diak, Caitlyn Joyce and Dexter Nelson from Leighton Elementary, narrowly defeated their competitors to take first place.

After the primary competition, the five intermediate-level teams took the stage to answer 16 questions about the books they read. After some intense battles, including several challenges, Leighton’s intermediate team – the Bippity Boppity Books – made it a Leighton sweep as they emerged victorious. Ruth Walker, Shelby Weigand and Emma Stevenson led the team to victory.

“All participants did a great job and should be very proud of what they accomplished,” said Minetto Element Director Jenni Sullivan, who served as moderator for the event. “It took a lot of work to get here. We are so proud of the efforts you have all made.”

The winning teams will advance to the regional competition, which will be held virtually against teams from neighboring school districts.
