The Law and Order Sound

This is not really anything important, but I was trying to describe the Law and Order noise to a friend. You know the noise that comes on when something pivotal happens in the story? So a quick YouTube search led me to “The Doink Doink.” For whatever reason this iconic auditory punctuation mark is quite funny out of context.

Conan’s New Show Conaw

Conan announced his new show today via YouTube and a “pretty crappy” office. The show which airs on TBS starting November 8, 2010 is to be called — Conan. That’s right, just Conan. Although as Conan O’Brien writes out the name of the show in his one take YouTube clip it looks more like Conaw, so there you have it. Conaw. Check out the video and see more at TeamCoCo.com

Post-Jackass Culture

To me there are two distinct eras for the modern youth culture — pre and post Jackass. Maiming and deforming one’s self for the sake of a laugh has become de rigueur amongst the UFC loving Christian Audigier set.

I suppose before Jackass there was a tamer form of “shoe-to-the-nuts” humour in the form of Funniest Home Videos, but the difference is accidental versus deliberate maiming.

So in the spirit of a good bollocking, I’m going to give this guy his 5 seconds of internet fame as a send-up to our post-Jackass society.

I was floating down the channel in Penticton with friends, a common summer activity, when I see this guy go flying off of the dike into the water. At first I thought it was an accident, but he just kept going, at least 4 or 5 more times, repeating this moronic stunt for our entertainment.

Despite the fact that he could have bashed his head in, it was hilarious and had everyone in a roar of laughter. The fact that he repeated the stunt so many times was mildly disturbing, but here is his second attempt captured on my iPhone, which is now waterlogged and possibly not functional.

Cheers Jackass.

Is Fighting in the Tour de France a Good Thing?

In Stage 6 of the this year’s 2010 Tour de France a fight erupted for the second time this tour. This time it was an outbreak between Carlos Barredo of team Quick Step and Rui Costa of team Caisse d’Epargne. It’s not clear what the fight was about, but it definitely added to the action, which begs the question — is fighting in The Tour a good thing?

As much as cycling is a gentleman’s sport it’s also a bit lame to watch on TV. A little fighting could boost the ratings and make things a little more exciting for the average viewer.

While it may not be a good thing for the sport in terms of sportsmanlike conduct, it could boost ratings and bring a little more awareness to cycling.

In addition to that I have to say that so far I’m disappointed with TSN’s coverage of the Tour de France. Last night there were no highlights, and tonight there were only highlights because a fight broke out. I get the sense the network is just taking the piss out of my sport.

So, if a few punches is what it takes to get some cycling coverage on TV, I’m in!

Ben & Jerry’s Go Viral — Jimmy Fallon Style

Ladysmith Snack Mambazo appeared through a cloud of smoke on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon once again this time to sing about Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I doubt that Ben & Jerry’s, the famed Vermont ice cream company, paid for this 3 minute plug, but it will likely reap some benefits just in time for summer.

It’s an example of how something creative and funny can sweep the internet super quickly. I can see this video quickly making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter.

Every kind of product from brands to television are having to change the way they approach their marketing in an increasingly difficult communications landscape. A clever viral message, or social media campaign will ultimately drive traffic. In this case it helps keep Jimmy Fallon on the radar and will also spur some interest in Ben & Jerry’s.

These days it is important to remain on the top layer, but is far more difficult to do now that people are cycling through information at such a rapid pace. The proof of whether or not this works will be if I tune into Jimmy Fallon, or pick up a tub of Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia next time I’m in the grocery store.

Will Jack Bauer Die?

Does Jack Bauer die at the end of the 24 series finale?

The way the events of 24 Season 8 have unfolded I wouldn’t be surprised if Jack Bauer does end up fatally wounded in the finale. It is not likely, but Fox has already pulled the wool over our eyes this season by announcing that this would be the final season of 24 about half way through the season. After watching every episode there is no way that they didn’t know that this would be the final season at the start of production. It has just been too good, and too intense.

This was obviously a well planned end of the series, and the talk of a 24 movie could just be a deliberate smokescreen to steer us from an ending the writers and producers don’t want to give away.

Is it even remotely believable that Jack Bauer will survive this season? After everything he’s done he almost has to end up dead. It may be a far fetched primetime TV conspiracy theory on its own, but I’d be willing to bet on it. The whole thing is a little reminiscent of the Sopranos series finale where Tony Soprano finally meets his demise. There really was no other possible outcome.

Here are some preview promo photos from the upcoming series/season finale (24 season 8 episode 23, 24)
