Penticton Lakeside 5km 2012

Today I made my big running comeback, but I should clarify that I was never super awesome to begin with, but I was a solid runner on the regional scene all the way through high school track and cross country. From 20-30 being a fast runner has not been a priority, but at the moment, thanks to a little friendly competition from my roommate, I am running faster than I have in over 10 years. So today was the first event I have entered since I was 18, and what better spot to do it than in Penticton.
The Lakeside 5km race / fun run is a pancake flat course along Lakeshore Drive and the surrounding neighbourhood. Aside from the wind it was a nice sunny spring day just shy of 10 degrees. In December I started at 28 minutes for 5km, and after consistently working at it 2-3 days a week with a few 10-12km runs thrown in there today I ran 20:03. My goal was to break 20 minutes, and I came up a few seconds short, but I’m still where I thought I would be. Next stop 18 minutes.
It’s good to be back and entering some events. Even though I’m not winning the entire race it gives me something to shoot for in training and a reason to push myself. A special thanks to my friends at The Bike Barn for loaning me a Garmin watch for the day, and to Peach City Runners for their great shoe advice, and the Penticton Pounders for organizing an awesome event.
