The Booking Office Cocktail Bar London

Located in London’s St. Pancras station, The Booking Office Restaurant & Bar is a swank lounge known for serving up a mean old fashioned punch, and artisan crafted cocktails.

The ceilings are high, as you can imagine they would be in a train station built in the 1800′s, the bar is set against the narrow office that would have been the ticket booking office back when this wing was in operation, and little wicket windows are still visible behind the rows of small batch spirits.

The menu is an eclectic mix of classic cocktail fare, with many drinks either originally created or inspired from classic London hotels like the Savoy. I managed to squeeze two drinks in, one being the Tiger’s Milk, a sweet milky cocktail with egg whites, and the other being a classic punch called the Glasgow. Both were top shelf by my palate.

According to my mate Stephen, The Booking Office is quite renowned for their punches, for which they have a full page dedicated on the drink list. Let’s say mine didn’t disappoint.

The area around St. Pancras might not be on the hot spot list of places to check out for London nightlife, but if you are up for a quiet evening of cocktails, chat, and sultry piano music, The Booking Office is well worth a visit.

Cool Cocktail Bars in San Francisco

Bourbon & Branch (Nob Hill) Website / Map

This prohibition style speakeasy in a colourful neighbourhood actually requires a password for you to enter. I somehow sweet talked my way past the hostess who was suitably dressed for the 40′s and got a seat at the bar. The other two schmucks that were waiting outside never made it past the front door as they fumbled around on their iPhones trying to figure out the password. In case you’re wondering what the password is, the secret is just to make areservation. This place is the opposite of first come, first served. The drink list here is excellent and the array of different liquor is impressive. Notably they carried Whistle Pig Rye, Hudson Whiskey, and Sazerac (the brand), which is becoming ever difficult to find as supply continues to be low. I had a Black Manhattan and their daily market special. Unfortunately I can’t remember exactly what was in it, but do remember thinking it was great. The bartenders were cordial, but not intrusive, and the vibe in this place is great. They also don’t serve any food, so make it your last or first stop.

The Keefer Hotel Bar Vancouver

The Keefer Hotel in Vancouver is an interesting addition to the landscape of historical Chinatown. Located on the edge of Chinatown on Keefer Street, the Keefer is a small, but chic boutique hotel with celebrity flair.

Already known for hosting Vancouver’s first Vegas style pool party on Sundays in the Summer, the Keefer is gaining a reputation in the elite party circle — I am not part of that circle, but was still curious about the place — the bar in particular.

The Keefer Bar is like a cross between dive bar watering hole, and fancy upscale Yaletown bar. That may seem like a bit of a contradiction, but the drink menu stays true to its Chinatown roots and injects a tastemaker’s flair into the mix.

The cocktails reflect some part of Chinatown’s history in their names and ingredients, while the wine list is entirely locally sourced from British Columbia’s wine regions.

I had the Milk & Honey cocktail and couldn’t stop at one. It was an absolutely delicious mix of Mekhong Whiskey, Sake, Rice Milk, Coconut Water, and something called Loa Han Gao (I’m not entirely sure what that is). This could be my new favourite cocktail in town, and this alone might get me to come back to the cool darkness of the Keefer Bar.

Pullman Wine Bar Montréal

I’m wandering the streets of Montréal on a cold and wet fall night when I stumble on a place just off Rue Sherbrooke called Pullman. It’s not a name that strikes me as a wine-snob type place, but one glance at the chandelier makes me love it.

Montréal is an amazing place to eat, and Pullman wine bar is no exception. The night I was there I had a nice selection of international and Canadian wines paired with a few appetizers including a killer Kobe beef mini-burger with hand cut slim fries.

The place is happening and you may want to get their a bit early if you want a seat on a busy Friday or Saturday night, or just sit at the bar like I do and talk wine with the sommeliers.

There are so many great places to drink wine in Montréal, but if you’re in the Plateau neighbourhood definitely give Pullman the look-up. It’s well worth the visit.

Cocktails at The Diamond in Gastown

I have heard so much about The Diamond over the past 6 months, but I’m not sure why it took me so long to get there.

Located in the old Loft Six in Gastown in the Gassy Jack circle at Powell and Carrall Street, the Diamond is a cool second floor loft bar reminiscent of something in Seattle’s Battery area or in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The large picture windows look out to the street below and the brick walls and high ceilings make for a cool space.

The quality of the cocktails was impressive, but even more so was the reasonable pricing. Almost everything on the menu, both drinks and food, with the exception of a few items were under $10. Not bad for such a swanky space! The cocktail list was creative, and hey, they even serve Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR for you hipster folk). Food was fairly good bistro appy fair with things like gyoza and a duck and chicken sub sandwich.

I’ve been to a few other cocktail bars in Vancouver and in many other cities and as much as I love a $15 cocktail I would much rather spend less. The Diamond is like the best of both worlds. Call it sophisticated affordability.

My only pet peeve of the evening was that the bartender didn’t pulverize the cherry in the bottom of my Old Fashioned, but it wasn’t enough to put me off. I was back the next two nights in a row.

All in all The Diamond is a great place to go. A young creative crowd teetering on the edge of hipster, but not quite, makes for a good young, but not too young, vibe. Definitely add The Diamond to your list of places to hit up in Vancouver.

Cool Bars in Barcelona

My first trip to Barcelona was totally overwhelming. It was over the New Year’s holiday and the place was packed. I was overly concerned about pickpockets, but never fell victim. The street vendors selling beer, drugs, night club tickets, and whatever else were really pushy.

This time around on my second trip to Barcelona I felt much more relaxed. I knew what to expect and the place seemed smaller and less confusing — familiar.

As with any other city my main focus was to find the best place to eat and drink. I went to a bunch of different places in the La Rambla and Barceloneta areas, and here are my top 3 recommendations for hip eating and drinking in Barcelona.

1.) La Champagneria (Can Paixano)

La Champagneria Barcelona

La Champagneria Barcelona

La Champagneria is my favourite of all the Barcelona bars I’ve been to. It’s wild, it’s crowded, the drinks are cheap, and the food is simple and bad for you — all good things when you’re on holiday. Don’t be surprised when the floor becomes littered with napkins and trash. That’s the custom here for this style of Tapas bar. Try the Morcilla, the sheep’s cheese, and the Jamon Iberico. A glass of Spanish Cava goes for about €0.65 to €1.00. Totally reasonable by any standards. I prefer the extra dry Cava as it is not so sweet, but the full range is available. It wouldn’t feel like a trip to Barcelona without at least one stop at La Champagneria. You can find it in the Barceloneta area near the Picasso statue on Passeig de Colom. See Map.

2.) Marmalade Bar Barcelona

Marmalade Restaurant Barcelona

Marmalade Restaurant Barcelona

Marmalade is located in the slightly dodgy neighbourhood of the Raval located behind La Boqueria Market on La Rambla. The interior of the bar is classy kitsch with cool wallpaper, backlighting, and funky lamps. I was there on a slower night and the bartender decided to play a long list of cool 80′s tracks that I had totally forgotten about. I also had some incredibly good tapas, some nice wine, and the best White Russian I have ever had. I highly recommend the Shrimp Brochette and the Crunchy Camembert Ravioli. Both were to die for. The Raval is a bit sketchy and is undergoing a change as these hip yuppy joints open up. If you plan on travelling through here at night try not to do it alone, and be aware of your surroundings. I didn’t find it that bad, but nobody I talked to had any positive things to say about the area. Use your street smarts. To get here take a right on Carrer Del Carme off La Rambla and walk about 10 minutes. See map.

3.) Milk Bar and Bistro Barcelona

Milk is owned by the same couple that owns Marmalade and was actually first on the scene and really changed the dining scene in Barcelona. The restaurant is not that big so a quick call ahead may be in order. This is more of a place I’d come for dinner, and the Sunday recovery brunch is becoming legendary in Barcelona. The food is not particularly Spanish, but is fairly rustic — stews, burgers, gourmet sausage. If you’re not familiar with the area Milk can be a bit of a chore to find. You can find it on Calle Gignas just off Carrer D’Avinyo. See Map.
