Bacheloritis: Lone Steak

Every now and again bacheloritis sets in and rather than try to fight it sometimes it’s best to run with it. Like the old saying goes, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

For this dinner I decided to go with the culinary equivalent of leaving the toilet seat up — a plain steak. No toppings, sauces, garnish, or side dishes required, yep, this is just plain meat reveling in its own delicious meat juices — giddy up.

Every now and again life gets super busy and I am forced to eat Safeway brand frozen Lasagna. It’s not even that it is that terrible, it’s just not as great as my normal cooking or eating out for dinner experience. It’s almost like that pair of underwear you never throw out that sits at the bottom of your drawer. When you get to it you know that either a) it’s time to do laundry, b) your life is headed for some kind of veritable disaster, or c) all of the above.

I figured since I’m scraping the bottom of the culinary barrel (sorry, that is a massive exaggeration) I should at least open a decent bottle of wine. So here is tonight’s dinner: Sandhill Gamay Noir 2008 paired with Safeway Meat Lasagna (probably also from 2007). I should mention that this dinner took 55 effortless minutes to produce.

I’ve tried the Sandhill Gamay before and really enjoyed it. Tonight I would describe it as a “cedar planked jolly rancher” if that is possible. Immediately I get quite a lot of fruit on the nose, but also a healthy dose of vanilla. On the palate it has a medium body and a ripe fruit kind of taste.

As always I could be way out in left, but that’s how I feel about it today. I do think this is one of the better Okanagan Gamay’s and Gamay in general is certainly a great bet for an inexpensive red wine from BC.

Notes from the winery:
Blackberry and cherry flavours are accented with delicate spice on the palate. Tart red berries and cherries linger through on the drying finish.
