Scott August - Turkey Fries

Scott August and the Flying Turkey Fries

I went to an art exhibit held at Interurban Gallery a while back, which was curated by my friends at The Storyboard Label. The crowd was artsy, and the art was, well interesting. I found Scott August’s fascination with portraying himself in awkward situations mildy stimulating, but mostly I became a fan of his “Turkey Fries” which seem to make a recurring appearance in his work. Imagine…a turkey pre-stuffed with french fries. What a noble thought.

Everything Is Going To Be Alright

Bob Rennie is one of the most prolific art collectors in Vancouver and his private gallery at Wing Sang in Vancouver’s Chinatown is one of the cool art hotspots in Vancouver, and open by appointment or invitation. I got a chance at a closer look today and especially love the rooftop art by Thomas Houseago and Dan Graham. The “everything is going to be alright” sign by Martin Creed is also poignant, simple, and uplifting. I could probably live on this rooftop. I love the building and the neighbourhood, and the Wing Sang is the perfect mix of old and new in this historic neighbourhood. If you’re an art lover put this one on your Vancouver culture crawl and try to get an appointment to see the building and it’s current exhibit from Rennie’s private collection.

Bicycle Frame Lighting

The Drake Hotel Cafe was sporting this new bicycle frame lighting fixture when I was in there recently. I can’t decide whether this is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, or if it’s something to marvel at. What do you think?

Vancouver 2010 Street Art

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games are approaching fast, and within the last month or so since my last visit to Vancouver the amount of street art in the city has also grown quickly. The city has a good vibe right now and I’m excited to see Vancouver shine at its best. The art around town definitely adds to the excitement. I particularly like this art signage at the Vancouver Public Library. Others around town I don’t completely understand like the giant tinfoil ball looking thing outside the Skytrain station on Georgia and Granville that is supposed to represent the future of China. To me it looks more like a crumpled up piece of aluminum, but maybe I’m a simpleton for not fully understanding.
