About

What is this site about?

This site exists as a writing habit and a way of keeping in touch with the goings on of the world and the relationships we have with each other and with technology. These are my personal and casual observations about different media trends, culture, and on a personal level — food and wine! I urge you to take me with a grain of salt, but please feel free to contact me or join the discussion.

Why I Write About This Stuff

Consumer Culture
I’ve always been fascinated with technology and communication. The internet and mobile technology continues to change the way that we interact and communicate with each other and I’m keen to stay on top of the trends that drive this change. From a marketing perspective there exists many new opportunities and also many new roadblocks on the way to effective marketing. For example, the over-serving of ads is now creating a distinctly ad savvy culture of consumers that are highly aware and highly sensitive to the effects of advertising. My profession is to figure out how this all works, and the best way to approach it, so naturally this is something that ends up on this blog.

Travel
I’m not sure I need to explain this one, but I love to travel. To me it has absolutely been the best education. By seeing the world and experiencing diverse cultures with an open heart and mind I feel that I’ve managed to put myself in a situation where I am greatly appreciative and observant of other people’s cultures. Nothing gets me going more than meeting fascinating people on the other side of the planet, or experiencing the familiarity of a far away land for the second, third, or umpteenth time! Travel is variety, and variety is truly the spice of life!

Food and Wine
“Eat, drink, and be merry” is probably the one catch phrase other than “go hard or go home” that hits the closest to home in my life. I never really appreciated food and wine until I started spending time with some great people in the Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia. Coming from the city of Vancouver I was working long hours and spending time stuck in traffic and eating in a hurry. Wine wasn’t something I had ever really liked, but then I befriended some great hosts in this place called The Okanagan, and everything changed. I experienced slow food for the first time, and I was hooked. Dinners in the garden consisting of fresh local food with great wine made down the street in the company of great people having a great conversation — all while looking over the setting sun over Lake Okanagan. Everything changed for me in a hurry and I began to appreciate some of life’s slower and finer moments. While I still work long hours and spend a lot of time travelling for business, I make sure to take some time out for those slower moments too. The Okanagan is an amazing place and I am a passionate advocate of the local wine that is produced here.
