My closet inner hipster loves places like the Dunlevy Snack Bar.
I’m not sure why, seeing as I’m about the furthest thing from a hipster that could exist. I revel in the mainstream, and have a closet full of clothing from evil mega-conglomerate clothing brands, but perhaps that is why I really like the stripped-down, no-nonsense approach that they’ve taken at this addition to the East Hastings strip.
The Downtown Eastside of Vancouver is a predominantly downtrodden neighbourhood, but it is abundant in culture of all kinds, and as of late, a burgeoning art scene.
If coffee is considered art, then the Dunlevy Snack Bar is its blank canvas. There is definitely a style about this place, but it is minimalist and somewhat neutral with only a few artifacts adorning the space.
You could say that the personal touch comes in the service and the coffee, leaving the space up to you to fill.
I had a mean Americano made with beans from Granville Island’s Origins Coffee Company served in a glass coffee cup. I’m a huge proponent of the see-through cup as it tells you right away whether or not your Americano will be a good one.
Mine had brilliant and rich crema which makes me a happy camper. If you’re wandering the East Hastings / Strathcona area and feel like a coffee pop by the Dunlevy Snackbar and say hi to the proprietor Theo. The coffee is great and the lunch menu simple, but delicious.
