Marichel Syrah Viognier

2009 Vintage

Tasted: August 2010

This is simply a fun summer wine. The 8% Viognier added into the Syrah makes for a lighter more approachable Syrah done in the Cote Rotie style, and also brings a price-point $25 red to Marichel Vineyards’ portfolio (their other Syrah is $40).

This light to medium body blended Syrah has bright and ripe fruit characteristics and I get a bit of pink grapefruit in the flavour profile. It’s not too big and not too small, and really is just a fun summer wine that I’d pair with everything from pasta to BBQ steaks. While you could cellar this one for a few years I don’t know what the point would be as it tastes great now. Let’s not overthink this one — it might take something away from it!
