The End of 24

Now that it has been officially cancelled by Fox and the series 24 comes to an end I can’t help but make the comparison to the end of the Sopranos. In the last two episodes two major players have died, Chloe O’Brien has been promoted to head of CTU, and Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer is out for blood.

The death of President Omar Hassan followed immediately by Renee Walker’s death prompted two silent clock tickers in a row. The show only ends with a silent clock ticking when somebody of significance dies, but that is usually only once per season at most. It happened before when George Mason died, and when Ryan Chappelle died, and when the lovable computer geek Edgar Stiles died, and when Terri Bauer died, and of course when President David Palmer died. It’s kind of a big deal. I bet that before this final season of 24 is over there will be a few more silent clocks. Hmm, who will die next?

This last episode, season 8 episode 17, also was one of the only times in the entire series when Jack Bauer has cried. I’m sure there has been others, but the only two Jack Bauer teary eyed moments that come to mind for me are when Teri Bauer is killed at the end of Day 1 and at the end of the Day 3 after Jack cuts off Chase Edmund’s hand with a fire axe.

The end of season 8 and the entire 24 series will no doubt be a nail biter with many more deaths and significant events for our favourite characters. Kim Bauer will likely get pulled back into the fray and I want to bet that somehow Tony Almeida will be back and Nina Myers might make an appearance from the dead.

Mondays just won’t be the same without Jack Bauer.
