Poplar Grove 2005 Syrah

Some of my wine educated friends may not fully agree with me on this one, but I really, really like this wine right now — almost enough to call it a favourite. This wine humbles me and I don’t feel like I can give an adequate description, because it’s not 100% about the wine, and this is why.

This wine, for whatever reason, makes me think of why I like wine in the first place.

Going back a few years before I was living in the Okanagan good wine might have been wasted on me, but my hosts here were generous enough to let me have it anyway. I may not have appreciated the subtleties, the complexities, or any of the actual wine characteristics, but over the course of my early time here in the Okanagan I began to appreciate the people I drank with and the setting in which we drank wine together.

It was the social aspect of wine that got me started and the rest came later. I could try to explain what this wine tastes like, but this is what I thought of when I drank it, and that should be good enough.

Out of the current releases at Poplar Grove this one is my favourite. It tastes good and I share it with good people. The end.

This is my favorite wine right now. I’m not afraid to say it. I actually went so far as to cook an entire meal in it the other night, and then drink it with the meal. I even drive out to Poplar Grove to purchase it, because I don’t know where it’s sold in town. I know almost nothing about wine, except that once I tasted this one, I didn’t want any other.
