Last Night’s Wine — Poplar Grove 2004 Cabernet Franc

I had dinner with a friend at the Naramata Inn last night. They had a great feature beef tenderloin with a lamb shepherd’s pie and a Stilton cheese dinner scone. The hearth bread with Poplar Grove Double Cream Camembert is always a favourite starter and alongside the Butternut Squash perogies with wild boar prosciutto it was a great meal.

For wine we had the 2004 Poplar Grove Cabernet Franc. This was my absolute favourite wine when I moved to the Okanagan in 2006, and it has continued to age with grace. It’s dark, luscious blackberry with a pepper blast on the palate, but smooth in the finish. It’s a big red, but a refined big red. The Naramata Inn seems to have a bunch of this still and it is well worth the price. Currently restaurant price for this wine is about $100. The original winery price tag was $40, back around the release date.
