I have heard so much about The Diamond over the past 6 months, but I’m not sure why it took me so long to get there.
Located in the old Loft Six in Gastown in the Gassy Jack circle at Powell and Carrall Street, the Diamond is a cool second floor loft bar reminiscent of something in Seattle’s Battery area or in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The large picture windows look out to the street below and the brick walls and high ceilings make for a cool space.
The quality of the cocktails was impressive, but even more so was the reasonable pricing. Almost everything on the menu, both drinks and food, with the exception of a few items were under $10. Not bad for such a swanky space! The cocktail list was creative, and hey, they even serve Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR for you hipster folk). Food was fairly good bistro appy fair with things like gyoza and a duck and chicken sub sandwich.
I’ve been to a few other cocktail bars in Vancouver and in many other cities and as much as I love a $15 cocktail I would much rather spend less. The Diamond is like the best of both worlds. Call it sophisticated affordability.
My only pet peeve of the evening was that the bartender didn’t pulverize the cherry in the bottom of my Old Fashioned, but it wasn’t enough to put me off. I was back the next two nights in a row.
All in all The Diamond is a great place to go. A young creative crowd teetering on the edge of hipster, but not quite, makes for a good young, but not too young, vibe. Definitely add The Diamond to your list of places to hit up in Vancouver.
