I grew up in North Vancouver and I can say that it has never really been a place for foodies, but lately the strip mall burger restaurants have been making way to some interesting cuisine. Burgoo seems to be leading the charge for the Lower Lonsdale set with their hearty stews and tagines, and now Fishworks seems set to make a name for itself on The Shore.
My good friend suggested we go there for dinner and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. The name Fishworks didn’t lead me to believe that it might be great, but that’s just what it was. The atmosphere was homey with a modern twist on rustic. High ceilings and tall windows adorn the simply decorated space. I had the salmon wellington which was pistachio crusted under the pastry and cooked to perfection.
The meal was great and the service was prompt and unpretentious. Thankfully this restaurant doesn’t employ the bimbo server mantra and makes the grade solely (haha) on good old fashioned manners and great food rather than plunging necklines and short skirts.
Lower Lonsdale is changing so quickly it’s always interesting to go back and visit the old stomping grounds, but I might have to return more often for the food. It’s too bad this restaurant didn’t exist when I lived in town!
(I apologize for the grainy photos. The food looked amazing in person, but I only had my iPhone and I didn’t want to disrupt dinner!)
