My friends Joe and Andrea want to meet me at Au Petit Chavignol for brunch/lunch.
“Where is it?”
“Somewhere down East Hastings. The address is 843.”
“Uhhh, okay.”
“Don’t worry, it’s supposed to be good”
I drive across town to 843 East Hastings and instantly recognize what is the yuppie/foodie haven Au Petit Chavignol. It’s bright yellow mod-design signage and Lower East Side Manhattan looking front windows are a stark contrast to the rest of the neighbourhood. There is literally nothing else around here of the yuppie sort. All of the surrounding buildings probably contain garment manufacturers, meat packing, and other industrial type businesses.
This is the last place I would expect to find a French eatery.
It’s quiet in the restaurant, but it is Saturday morning. Apparently the spot is actually quite happening at night. The lunch/dinner/everything menu is homey in an “I love cheese francaphone” kind of way. Croque Monsieur and Madame sandwiches, Gourmet Mac and Cheese, French Onion Soup. Everything is simple but delicious sounding. My mates order some lunch. I had a huge breakfast at Phat, so I order a Grand Marnier creme brulee and a cappuccino as an in-between meal.
The food looks excellent, the atmosphere is cool, the service great, and my stomach full. Although I did not sample that much of the menu I felt I had discovered a well kept secret. Next time I’m in Vancouver I’ll be sure to stop in for some wine and cheese…almost certainly Mac & Cheese. Ooh, and don’t forget to visit the accompanying cheese shop!
