Okay, so I haven’t been everywhere in the world, nor have I gone to every coffee shop, but I love coffee. It’s no secret. In fact, I plan on dying of some coffee related ailment, but hopefully not lack of coffee. So call this a work in progress as I attempt to go everywhere and drink coffee everywhere.
I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but coffee makes me feel relaxed yet alive. I love wasting the day away in a coffee shop working, or reading, or just chatting. In any city I arrive in my first thought is always “where’s a good coffee shop?” The list below is an ongoing list of my favourites around the world based on some combination of coffee quality and atmosphere.
Vancouver, BC, Canada
- Jitters Cafe – West 4th – One of my first choices in Vancouver. Totally off the radar except to locals. They brew an awesome cup of Illy espresso and make really good real sandwiches. None of that panini press crap.
- Brazza Gelato – North Vancouver – Go for a chat, meet friends, lacklustre style/decor, but fantastic coffee
- Beans on Lonsdale – North Vancouver – Great coffee corner spot to sit and stare out the window on a rainy day
- Turk on The Drive – Commercial Drive – The kind of place you should go to write a novel – Small and busy
Tokyo, Japan
- Ben’s Cafe – Takadanobaba, Shinjuku
Austin, Texas, USA
- Cafe Medici – University of Texas, Austin
- Juan Pelota – Warehouse District
New York, NY, USA
- 88 Orchard – Lower East Side
Penticton, BC, Canada
Los Angeles, CA, USA
- Hustler Hollywood – West Hollywood – Believe it or not!
- Intelligentsia – Venice
- The Cow’s End – Venice
- Java Detour – West Hollywood
